food drive
St. Philip the
Apostle School is conducting its annual Thanksgiving food drive to collect non-perishable unopened items for those in need. Food products, i.e. pasta, rice, cereal, instant potatoes, flour, gravy, canned fruit and vegetables, can be left in the vestibule through Nov. 21. Frozen turkey donations can be left at the school between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Nov. 17 through Nov. 21.
Food baskets are distributed to school and parish families. Leftover items will be donated to the Father English Center’s food pantry in Paterson.

"The Brief and
Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao," Junot Diaz’s Pulitzer prize-winning novel, is the selection for the next book discussion at the Library. The discussion will take place Tuesday, Nov. 18 at 7 p.m. in the Main Library.
Please read the book before attending. The discussion is open to anyone, with no prior book discussion experience or preparation necessary.
Children and their
families are invited to a pre-Thanksgiving magic show featuring Mark Zacharia at the Main Library on Saturday, Nov. 15 at 2 p.m.
The show is free and open to all, but seating is limited, so arrive early.

The Clifton Association
of Artists has mounted a show of the works of the members of the Clifton Association of Artists. The exhibit is on display through Nov. 29. Virtually all media are represented from oils to watercolor to pastel painting and photography. There is no set theme for this year’s show but a number of works reflect the fall and holiday season.
It can be viewed in the gallery of the Library during regular hours Monday to Thursday, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., Friday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday 1 to 5 p.m.
The CAA meets monthly from October through May at the Senior Citizens Center on City Hall grounds. All meetings are open to the public.

Thank a veteran
by attending the free 10th annual Salute to Veterans concert/show presented by the Recreation Department on Tuesday, Nov. 25 from 7 to 10 p.m. in the CHS auditorium, 333 Colfax Ave.
The event will feature a lobby display, a patriotic ceremony, an inspirational procession/march of veterans form the six branches of service with narration and theme music, music for dancing by a 20-piece professional band and vocalists, the Silver Starlite Orchestra, a special recognition of the Avenue of Flags volunteers and a USO-type canteen offering free refreshments.
No tickets are needed but a donation of a non-perishable food item or cash would be appreciated.

The northern New
Jersey region of Hadassah will hold its annual myrtle wreath brunch on Sunday, Nov. 23 from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Wilshire Grand Hotel, 350 Pleasant Valley Way in West Orange. This year’s theme is "Being thankful for what we can do as Hadassah."
The wreath honoree and guest speaker is Hadassah’s National President Nancy Falchuk, who will share her most recent experiences representing Hadassah at important meetings in Israel.
Chapter women of the year and highlights will be recognized and awards for fundraising and membership will be presented as well.

The CHS Mustang

The United Reformed

A citywide drive
for bed pillows is underway for the shelter. Residents are being asked to donate one pillow. Cost is $2.50. Expensive pillows are not requested since they must be discarded if not taken when the women leave the shelter. Other items needed are towels, washcloths, twin size bed sheets, comforters or blankets. Pillowcases new or gently used are also needed.
The holiday season is approaching and the need for stuffed animals, toys, puzzles, ribbons, pieces of material for bags, are also needed. In donating items needed for domestic abuse personal care bags, stuffed animals, toys, clothes, diapers, baby items and more.

Colleen Murray, organizer
of the Clifton chapter was named National by-laws chairperson at the Grandmothers Clubs of America national convention in Kansas City, Mo. She was also named as the National Ozark Queen of the convention and won for her skit as Dorothy. She has served as chairperson for the scrap book and yearbook committees for the past two years.
She received a certificate from Cure – Children’s Cancer Research for the Club’s donation of $3,100 for 2008. Georgia placed first with $6,000 and the Clifton chapter came in second.

Developmental Center, a 24-hour residential facility for developmentally disabled adults, is seeking community residents to provide parties and entertainment for its clients.

The Passaic County
Women’s Center needs your help to assist survivors of sexual assault. PCWC will be holding a free comprehensive, 40-hour volunteer advocate training spanning an eight-week period beginning mid to late September. This training will be held on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 7 to 9:30 p.m. and alternating Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Once trained, volunteers will provide support and advocacy, information and referrals, to survivors of sexual assault and/or domestic violence during accompaniments to hospitals and or law enforcement agencies.
