The Passaic County Clerk’s office will be at the Main Library, Thursday, Nov. 13 from 5 to 7 p.m. to help residents with applications for passports and other County services. Notary registration and renewals will also be available.
Barnes & noble
November is National Caregivers Month and author Patty Kearns will speak to caregivers on "three methods for dissolving your stress and regaining your presence of mind" and Eric Joice, executive director of Family Resource Network, who will discuss many aspects of caregiving on Tuesday, Nov. 11 at 7:30 p.m. at the Barnes & Noble, 395 Route 3 east.
Artie Lange author of "Too Fat to Fish" will sign his new book at the Barnes & Noble Wednesday, Nov. 12 at 6 p.m.
A poetry group meets month at Barnes & Noble. The next meeting will be Thursday, Nov. 12 at 7:30 p.m. Hosted by Laura Boxx and Maria Mazzioti Gillian, November’s featured readers are Laura Freegood, Gloria Rovder Healy and Jim Gwyn.

Flea Market
There will be a giant flea market and craft and collectible show on Nov. 9, from 9 to 5 p.m. at Jubilee Park, at the corner of Clifton Avenue and Allwood Road (off Route 3). Admission is free and it’s sponsored by the Clifton Recreation Department.

Country Fair
The First United Methodist Church of Passaic will hold its annual country fair and famous roast beef dinner on Nov. 8, at 145 Paulison Ave.
Doors open at 11 a.m. for the fair and a mini auction will be held at 3 p.m. with dinner at 6 p.m.
There will be lots for sale, including funnel cakes, a bake table and much more.

blood drive
A blood drive will be held Monday, Nov. 10 from 4:30 to 7 p.m. at the Clifton Health Department, 900 Clifton Ave. in cooperation with Community Blood Services. To schedule an appointment, call 201-251-3703.
Any healthy individual, age 17 through 75 and weighing at least 110 pounds can donate blood. Donors should eat a moderate meal before donating and must bring identification showing signature. All donors receive a complimentary cholesterol screening with every blood donation.

The Board of Trustees meets on the third Wednesday (unless otherwise noted) of each month at 7 p.m. in the community meeting room.
The dates are Nov. 19, Dec. 17, Jan. 21, 2009 and Feb. 11 (which is the second Wednesday).
The November movies will provide pure entertainment. The movie dates and times are:
Thursday, Nov. 13, 1:30 p.m. – Main Library;
Tuesday, Nov. 18, 1:30 p.m. – Allwood branch; and
Thursday, Nov. 20, 7 p.m. – Main Library
"The Brief and Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao," Junot Diaz’s Pulitzer prize-winning novel, is the selection for the next book discussion at the Library. The discussion will take place Tuesday, Nov. 18 at 7 p.m. in the Main Library.
Please read the book before attending. The discussion is open to anyone, with no prior book discussion experience or preparation necessary.
Children and their families are invited to a pre-Thanksgiving magic show featuring Mark Zacharia at the Main Library on Saturday, Nov. 15 at 2 p.m.
The show is free and open to all, but seating is limited, so arrive early.

The Clifton Association of Artists is holding its annual art exhibit at the Main Library, 292 Piaget Ave., through Nov. 29. The exhibit, on a range of themes, includes artwork in various media from several artists in the Association.
It can be viewed in the gallery of the Library during regular hours Monday to Thursday, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., Friday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday 1 to 5 p.m.

St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church is sponsoring a harvest festival square dance Nov. 8 with dinner at 6:30 p.m. and the square dancing at 7 p.m. Professional dancers will stage a square dance exhibition with caller Ron Kapnick.
Tickets are $12. The buffet dinner includes sandwiches, soda, coffee and desserts.

The CHS Mustang Band will have its 70th anniversary dinner Saturday, Nov. 29 at 6:30 p.m. at Johnny’s Bar & Grill, 110 Ackerman Ave. The dinner will include a homemade family style roast beef dinner including wine, beer and soda.

The Passaic County Historical Society Genealogy Club will meet Saturday, Nov. 8 at 10 a.m. at the Louis Bay 2nd Library, 345 Lafayette Ave. in Hawthorne. Nancy Ronning will present "Their Times and Their Places" and will demonstrate that there is much more to be learned about our ancestors than just names and dates through the use of history, biography, nonfiction books and newspapers.

angels of animals
Angels of Animals will hold pet adoptions Friday, Nov. 7, 14, 21 and 28 from 6 to 9 p.m. at Petco, located on Route 3 west.
The group also needs qualified individuals to provide short and long term foster care for adult cats and kittens. Angels of Animals will cover the costs of veterinary care, food and supplies for the animal, as well as provide you with support while the animal is in foster care.

phenomenal grandmothers
The Phenomenal Grandmothers will meet on the first Wednesday of the month from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Main Library, 292 Piaget Ave. All women are welcome to attend. You do not have to be a grandmother.
A citywide drive for bed pillows is underway for the shelter. Residents are being asked to donate one pillow. Cost is $2.50. Expensive pillows are not requested since they must be discarded if not taken when the women leave the shelter. Other items needed are towels, washcloths, twin size bed sheets, comforters or blankets. Pillowcases new or gently used are also needed.
The holiday season is approaching and the need for stuffed animals, toys, puzzles, ribbons, pieces of material for bags, wicker baskets suitable for Easter are also needed. In donating items needed for domestic abuse personal care bags, stuffed animals, toys, clothes, diapers, baby items and more.

Colleen Murray, organizer of the Clifton chapter was named National by-laws chairperson at the Grandmothers Clubs of America national convention in Kansas City, Mo. She was also named as the National Ozark Queen of the convention and won for her skit as Dorothy. She has served as chairperson for the scrap book and yearbook committees for the past two years.
She received a certificate from Cure – Children’s Cancer Research for the Club’s donation of $3,100 for 2008. Georgia placed first with $6,000 and the Clifton chapter came in second.
attention volunteers
The North Jersey Developmental Center, a 24-hour residential facility for developmentally disabled adults, is seeking community residents to provide parties and entertainment for its clients.
The Center will provide the refreshments.
The Center is seeking clerical volunteers. Clerical duties include typing, filing, answering phones and general clerical procedures.

Developmentally disabled adults seek companionship from community volunteers. North Jersey Developmental Center’s People Who Need People program provides friendship for clients who have no visitors and limited community contact. Clients greatly benefit from the extra care and attention that a volunteer visitor provides. No special skills are necessary, although we can utilize special talents.

The Passaic County Women’s Center needs your help to assist survivors of sexual assault. PCWC will be holding a free comprehensive, 40-hour volunteer advocate training spanning an eight-week period beginning mid to late September. This training will be held on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 7 to 9:30 p.m. and alternating Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Once trained, volunteers will provide support and advocacy, information and referrals, to survivors of sexual assault and/or domestic violence during accompaniments to hospitals and or law enforcement agencies.
If you are interested in making a difference in the lives of sexual assault survivors; if you are caring, compassionate, motivated and empathetic and would like to volunteer your time and energy for this worthwhile cause, call Tracy Francese, program coordinator at 973-881-0725, ext. 19 to set up an initial interview consultation.
