Police Blotter Oct. 24, 2008


False Information
Mark Krevolt, 23, of Clifton, was arrested and charged with giving false information to police on Oct. 14.
According to police reports, officers Joshin Smith and David Rowe stopped a 2000 Nissan for having an obstructed view of the front windshield on Clifton Avenue. The driver told the officers his name was Mr. Baker, but after his name and identity could not be found during a computer search, he admitted he was really Mark Krevolt. A new search revealed Krevolt had three outstanding warrants and was charged.
Disorderly Person
Manuel Gushiken, 31, of Garfield, was arrested and charged with resisting arrest and for disorderly conduct on Oct. 14 at 8:38 a.m.
According to police reports, officers found Gushiken asleep behind the wheel of his car on Second Street and Highland Avenue blocking a residential driveway. After the officers woke Gushiken, he became belligerent and refused to answer questions. When one officer attempted to pat him down to search for weapons, he resisted and was arrested.
Underage possession of alcohol
Jamie Garcia, 20, of Passaic, was arrested and charged with possession of an alcoholic beverage as an underage person.
According to police reports, detectives Randy Colondres and Paul Hasselberger of the street crimes unit, stopped Garcia’s vehicle on Lexington Avenue and while speaking with him saw a 12-pack of beer on the seat. When the officers learned Garcia was not 21, he was arrested and charged.
Drugs & Underage drinking
Demetrik Pittman, 26, of Passaic was arrested and charged with buying alcoholic beverages for others who are under the legal drinking age as well as possession of heroin and marijuana with intent to distribute.
According to police reports, detectives Randy Colondres and Paul Hasselberg observed Pittman take money from two other males and give them alcoholic beverages in return. The officers approached and after they learned that the two males who were in possession of the alcoholic beverages purchased by Pittman were 16 and 19, all were charged. A 16-year-old juvenile from Passaic and Daquaan Griffith, 19, of Passaic, were charged with possession of alcoholic beverages while underage.
The officers later searched Pittman’s car and according to police reports, found 23 bags of marijuana and 12 bags of heroin. He was charged with possession of heroin and marijuana and possession with intent to distribute it within 1,000 feet of a school.
The police reports also show that when the 16-year-old was searched the officers found crack cocaine in his possession, he was charged with possession of crack cocaine as a juvenile and turned over to his parents.
Drugs
Franklin Johnson, 46, of East Orange, was arrested and charged with possession of heroin and attempting to destroy evidence on Oct. 15, at 4:05 p.m.
According to police reports, Officer Kevin Colucci observed Johnson walking on Main Avenue and Piaget Avenue and appeared to be hiding something behind his back when he saw the officer. The officer, backed up by Officer Michael Humenik, approached and observed Johnson place eight small bags containing a white substance in his mouth and swallow it. After the officers learned the powder was heroin they transported Johnson to St. Mary’s Hospital where he refused treatment and was charged.
 
Christopher Vasilik, 27, of Clifton, was arrested and charged with possession of marijuana on Oct. 15 at 8:17 p.m.
According to police reports, officers Joshin Smith and David Rowe stopped Vasilik’s 2002 Mercedes for a traffic violation on Van Houten Avenue. As the officers approached the car, reports show they observed Vasilik placing something under the floor board and inspected, finding a fanny pack containing marijuana under 50 grams. He was also given a summons for careless driving.
 
Karim Abu-Alia, 18, of Clifton, Amir Feratovic, 18, of Clifton, and a 17-year-old female from Clifton, were charged with possession of marijuana on Oct. 15 at 2:22 p.m.
According to police reports, detectives Steven Berge and John Kavakich of the Street Crimes Unit responded to Roy Court on a report of possible drug activities. At the scene the officers found the three who were in possession of marijuana and charged them.
Stolen vehicles
A 1989 Oldsmobile parked on Merselis Avenue was reported stolen on Oct. 15. The car was parked in front of the owner’s residence.
 
A 1989 Chevrolet Blazer was reported stolen between Oct. 15 and Oct. 16 while parked on Highland Avenue. The Blazer was involved in a police chase at 3:48 a.m. with Passaic police officers who eventually lost track of the car. The Blazer was found in Montclair the next day.
 
A 1988 Toyota Camry was reported stolen between Oct. 15 and Oct. 16 while parked on East Sixth Street.
 
A 1996 Nissan Altima was reported stolen on Oct. 17 while parked on Dyer Avenue in front of the owner’s residence.
 
A 1992 GMC Gimmy was reported stolen from Foster Avenue between Oct. 16 and Oct. 17.l
 
A 1997 Ford Explorer was reported stolen on Oct. 18 while parked on Kingsland Road.
 
A 1997 Acura Integra parked in the Costco parking lot on Bridewell Place was reported stolen on Oct. 18.
Recovered stolen vehicles
A 2007 Ford Fusion reported stolen in Clifton on Oct. 10 was found in Passaic on Oct. 16.
Police Pursuits
Clifton Police Officer Steven Maza pursued a stolen 2000 Nissan Quest through Clifton’s Route 21 to Nutley, Belleville, Jersey City and Newark on Oct. 20 at 12:07 a.m., eventually losing track of the car in Lodi.
According to police reports, Maza attempted to stop the vehicle for speeding on Route 21 south, bur rather than stopping, the driver sped up in an attempt to elude the officer. The driver, in his attempt to flee, cut off cars, ran through red lights and forced motorists off the road.
 
Bahadir Yahsi, 26, of Clifton, was arrested and charged with eluding police and resisting arrest, following a police pursuit.
According to police reports, Officer Wilfredo Ramirez observed Yahsi driving a 1992 Honda Accord and not wearing a seatbelt and after a license plate check revealed the car was unregistered, the officer instructed Yahsi to pull over. Rather than stop, Yahsi sped up and attempted to flee leading the officer on a chase from Main Avenue to Getty Avenue where he exited the car and attempted to flee on foot. He led officers through yards and the neighborhood until officers Randy Colondres, Kevin Colucci and Robert Anderson caught him. He was charged with eluding police, resisting arrest, and having an outstanding warrant. He was also given summonses for having no insurance, driving while suspended, driving an unregistered car and not wearing a seatbelt.
Counterfeit money
Two women in their late 20s and one man in his late 20s or early 30s walked into the Target store on Kingsland Road and purchased about $600 worth of merchandise, paying with six counterfeit US $100 bills on Oct. 10 at about 9 p.m.
According to police reports, the two women, under the direction of the male, purchased an Xbox360 game, digital cameras and other merchandise and took the items to the register where they handed the cashier six fake $100 bills.
Detective Capt. Robert Rowan said the three left the store and entered a minivan in the parking lot and disappeared. Rowan said the quality of the fake bills was "good" but said the 100 in the right corner did not light up when checked and two of the bills had the same serial numbers. He said the paper, when inspected, did not feel the same as a real $100 bill. The Secret Service has been notified of the transaction, Rowan said.
Warrants
Police Officer Kevin Colucci observed a man urinating in public on Luke Avenue while standing next to a 1997 Nissan Maxima and approached. The officer gave Manuel Lopez, 22, of Passaic a summons for public urination and also checked out his friend waiting for him in the car. His friend, Anthony Martinez, 21, of Clifton was charged with having an outstanding warrant.
Shoplifting
Police arrested and charged three Queens, NY residents for shoplifting hundreds of dollars worth or merchandise from the Target store on Kingsland Road on Oct. 14. Arrested were: Francisco Azcona-Torres, 36, Aracelis Torres, 31 and Francisco Gutierrez, 25. According to police reports, all three were spotted by store security as they covered up the real price tags with fake tags making the merchandise much cheaper, in one case as much as $645 cheaper. All three were charged with shoplifting.
Burglary
A snow blower worth $1,000 was reported stolen from a garage on East Fourth Street between Oct. 12 and Oct. 13.
 
Hundreds of dollars worth of tools and equipment were reported stolen out of a 2008 Ford truck parked in the Clifton DPW garage on East Seventh Street on Oct. 14. According to police reports, an air drill, and air wrench and a grinder were reported stolen.
Burglary to vehicles
Willie Murray, 38, of Passaic, was arrested and charged for burglary to a vehicle on Oct. 17, at 2:44 a.m. on Sheridan Avenue.
According to police reports, Officer Steven Farrell was patrolling the area when he spotted a 2004 Ford parked with its interior lights on. The officer approached the vehicle and saw a man rummaging through the inside of the car. Reports show that when the suspect, later identified as Murray, saw the officer he fled on a bicycle through the neighborhood. The officer, with the help of Passaic Police officers, pursued Murray as he ran through back yards and jumped over fences. Officer Farrell tackled him and handcuffed him at Highland and Main avenues.
During questioning, police reports show Murray admitted to breaking into the car to support a drug habit. He was charged with burglary, resisting arrest and eluding police.
"This was great work by Patrolman Farrell," said detective Capt. Robert Rowan, adding ‘there are so many break-ins to cars and they are so hard to catch that this was a great arrest." Rowan said the apprehension happened because Farrell’s was "proactive" and "observant."
 
A 2008 Chrysler Sebring was reported broken into on Oct. 17 at 12:30 p.m. while parked on Allwood Road in the CVS parking lot. A laptop computer was reported stolen.
 
A 2002 Chrysler Sebring was reported broken into between Oct. 17 and Oct. 18 while parked --------------------------. A Coach purse containing a Coach wallet, checkbooks, credit cards and a cell phone were reported stolen.
Criminal mischief
The rear window of a 1992 Buick LeSabre was reported smashed by a rock while parked on Van Houten Avenue on Oct. 14 at 3:53 a.m.
 
A resident of Skyview Terrace reported finding the words "Heil Hitler" graffitied on her front door between Oct. 14 and Oct. 15. According to police reports, a black marker was used to write the hateful graffiti. The resident told police she’s not sure why she was targeted and told officers she is not Jewish.
 
Sacred Hear School on Clifton Avenue reported graffiti had been spray-painted on the exterior walls of the school sometime between Oct. 10 at 8:30 p.m. and Monday Oct. 13 at 9:30 a.m.
According to police reports, the school was also the victim of a graffiti vandal several months ago, but in that case police charged a Lodi 17-year-old for the crime. The two incidents, according to police, are not related.
The vandals left no message, rather they just spray painted their names or tags.
DWI
Christopher Miller, 34, of Paterson, was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated (DWI) on Oct. 13.
According to police reports, Officer David Petrillo observed Miller, in his 2007 Honda Accord, speeding on Main Avenue and stopped him. While speaking with him, the officer detected signs of intoxication and administered field sobriety tests, which reports show Miller did not pass. He was arrested and transported to police headquarters where he was charged with DWI after posting a score of .21 on the breath alcohol test. (A score of .08 and higher shows legal intoxication).
 
David Pardo-Rojas, 28, of Belleville, was arrested and charged with DWI on Oct. 13.
According to police reports, Officer Darren Kester stopped Rojas on Center Street for driving the wrong way on a one way street. While speaking with him, the officer detected signs of intoxication and administered roadside sobriety tests, which Rojas was unable to complete, according to the officer’s report. He was arrested and transported to police headquarters where he was charged with DWI and refusal to take a breath alcohol test.
 
John Santee, 51, of Clifton, was arrested and charged with DWI on Oct. 9 at 10:29 p.m.
According to police reports, Officer Gregory Eromenok responded to a motor vehicle accident report on Sunnycrest Avenue. At the scene he found Santee had struck a parked vehicle, and while speaking with him detected signs of intoxication. Following failed roadside sobriety tests, Santee was arrested and taken to police headquarters where he was charged with DWI after posting a .25 on the breath alcohol test.
 
Vasyl Muchychka, 26, of Streamwood, Ill., was arrested and charged with DWI on Oct. 10 at 1:32 a.m. while his passengers Michael Ozarowski, 25, of Elmwood Park, Thomas Cholewa, 24, of Elmwood Park and Pawell Fraczyk, 22, of Garfield, were charged with obstruction of justice, after the three left the scene of an accident.
According to police reports, Officers Wendy Juba and Louis Reza responded to Van Houten Avenue on a report of a hit and run. At the scene the officers followed a trail of car fluid and found a damaged Mercedes parked in a lot on Van Houten Avenue with four men walking away. The officers instructed the men to stop, but only one stopped, Ozarowski, while the others fled the area. The officers traced the others down and once they determined the driver was Muchychka, they arrested him and charged with DWI after posting a result of .16 on the breath alcohol test.
 
Hector Aviles, 25, of Paterson, was arrested and charged with DWI on Oct. 15 at 3:25 a.m.
According to police reports, Officer Robert Domski found Aviles’ 1992 Honda Civic parked in the middle of Lexington Avenue while he slept behind the wheel. After waking him up, the officer detected signs of intoxication and administered roadside sobriety tests, which reports show Aviles could not complete. He was arrested and charged with DWI after a posting results of .17 on the breath alcohol test.
 
Kelly Gallagher, 31, of Fairfield, was arrested and charged with DWI on Oct. 15, at 10:35 p.m.
According to police reports, Gallagher’s 1999 Jeep Cherokee was involved in a motor vehicle accident where it rolled over several times. The officers detected signs of intoxication while Gallagher was being transported to the hospital and chargted with DWI following a blood test.
 
Jackson Angel, 34, of Paterson, was arrested and charged with DWI on Oct. 16 at 1:09 a.m.
According to police reports, Officer Wendy Juba stopped Angel driving his Ford Taurus erratically on Hazel Street and stopped him. While speaking with him the officer detected signs of intoxication and arrested Angel after he was unable to complete field sobriety tests. At police headquarters he was charged with DWI after posting results of .18 on the breath alcohol tes.
 
Steven Jackson, 31, of Montclair, was arrested and charged with DWI on Oct. 16 at 2:39 a.m.
According to police reports, officers Darren Brodie and Joseph Pichnarcik responded to Route 3 and Main Avenue to backup Sgt. David Niland who had pulled over an intoxicated driver. At the scene the officers administered field sobriety tests and arrested Jackson after he was unable to complete them. He was taken to police headquarters where he refused further tests and was charged with DWI and refusal to test.
 
Milia Radecki, 40, of Clifton, was arrested and charged with DWI on Oct. 17, at 12:39 a.m.
According to police reports, Officer Nicholas Hriczov responded to East Clifton Avenue on a report of a hit and run. The officers found Radecki on Knapp Avenue, who was standing next to his 1997 Ford Taurus that had suffered heavy front end damage and was missing a tire. The officer detected signs of intoxication while speaking with him and administered field sobriety tests, which Radecki was unable to complete. He was arrested and transported to police headquarters where he was charged with DWI after posting results of .15 on the breath alcohol test.
 
Andre Thomas, 28, of Bergenfield, was arrested and charged with DWI on Oct. 18, at 3 a.m.
According to police reports, Officer Wendy Juba stopped Thomas on Route 46 at Piaget Avenue for driving too closely to another vehicle. While speaking with him, the officer detected signs of intoxication and administered roadside sobriety tests, which Thomas was unable to complete. He was arrested and transported to police headquarters where he was charged with DWI after posting results of .18 on the breath alcohol test.
 
Abul Hasnat, 25, of Clifton, was arrested and charged with DWI on Oct. 19 at 3:46 a.m.
According to police reports, Officer Scott Gibson saw Hasnat in the parking lot of Pub 46 on Route 46 east and approached him. When the officer detected signs of intoxication, he advised Hasnat not to drive and offered to call him a taxi. Hasnat told the officer he would not drive and was going to his car to get his cell phone. The officer walked away and a short while later saw Hasnat enter his vehicle and attempt to drive away. He was stopped and after failing the field sobriety tests was arrested and taken to police headquarters where he was charged with DWI after posting results of .11 on the breath alcohol test. He was also charged with possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia.
