Police Blotter 10-17-08

DWI
Richard Flemming, 50, of Paterson, was arrested and charged with DWI on Oct. 7, at 7:01 p.m.
According to police reports, officers Bruce Lawson and William Frank stopped Flemming after another motorist reported a possible DWI on Center Avenue.
While speaking with Flemming, the officers detected signs of intoxication and administered roadside sobriety tests, which he was unable to complete. After he was arrested, Flemming took a breath alcohol test and posted results of .31, reports ashow. He was charged with DWI and having open containers of alcoholic beverages in his motor vehicle.
 
Ryan Landrigan, 32, of Nutley, was arrested and charged with DWI on Oct. 7 at 10:44 p.m.
According to police reports, detectives Paul Ogden and Alan Fiorella responded to the Jubelee Park Diner on a report of theft of services. According to the diner’s management, Landrigan had skipped out on an $18 bill. The officers located the man outside sitting in his 1992 Ford pickup on Sycamore Road. When questioning him the officer detected signs of intoxication, and following failed field sobriety tests, arrested and transported him to police headquarters where he took a breath alcohol test with results of .22. (Results of .08 and higher show legal intoxication.)
Landrigan was also charged with having open containers of alcoholic beverages in his motor vehicle and theft of services.
 
John Santee, 51, of Clifton, was arrested and charged with DWI on Oct. 9 at 10:29 p.m.
According to police reports, Santee struck a parked car on Sunnycrest Avenue, causing extensive damage to both vehicles.
According to police reports, officer Gregory Eromenok detected signs of intoxication when questioning Santee and administered roadside intoxication tests. When Santee was unable to complete the tests he was arrested and transported to police headquarters where he was charged with DWI after posting a .25 on the breath alcohol test.
 
Zlatko Spasojevic, 44, of Belleville, was arrested and charged with DWI on Oct. 10, at 10:13 p.m.
According to police reports, officers Christopher Ianos and Daniel Telofski responded to a motor vehicle accident on Route 21 at the Route 3 ramp and found Spasojevic had crashed his 1996 Dodge Integra into a Clifton fire truck that had been pulled over on the side of the road assisting in an earlier motor vehicle accident. Police reports show the firetruck’s emergency lights were turned on at the time of the accident. While speaking with Spasojevic, the officers detected signs of intoxication and noted that he began chewing gun in an effort to mask the smell of alcoholic beverages, according to police reports. Following failed field sobriety tests, Spasojevic was arrested and transported to police headquarters where he was charged with DWI after posting results of .13 on the breath alcohol test. He was also issued summonses for reckless driving and driving without insurance.
 
Valente Hernandez-Hernandez, 31, of Passaic, was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated (DWI) on Oct. 11 at 2 a.m.
Officer Steven Farrell was on patrol on Main and Sheridan avenues when he observed Hernandez speeding and stopped him. While speaking with the driver the officer detected signs of intoxication and administered roadside sobriety tests, which Hernandez failed, according to police reports. Hernandez was arrested and transported to police headquarters where he refused further testing and was charged with DWI and refusal to test.
 
Richard Scott, 59, of Clifton, was arrested and charged with DWI on Oct. 13, at 12:48 a.m.
According to police reports officers Robert Domski and Nicholas Hriczov were dispatched to Orange court on a report of a suspicious person sitting in a 1995 blue Jeep just revving the engine. The officers found Scott asleep behind the wheel with the keys in the ignition and woke him up. The officers, while speaking with Scott, detected signs of intoxication and administered roadside sobriety tests, which reports show Scott was unable to complete. He was arrested and charged with DWI after posting a .19 result on the breath alcohol test.
 
Christopher Miller, 34, of Paterson, was arrested and charged with DWI on Oct. 13 at 12:13 a.m.
According to police reports, Officer David Petrillo stopped Miller on Main and Sewall avenues for speeding an driving erratically. While speaking with Miller, the officer detected signs of intoxication and administered field sobriety tests. After failing to perform the field tests, Miller was arrested and transported to police headquarters where he was charged with DWI after posting a .21 on the breath alcohol test. He was also given a summons for reckless driving.
 
Darwin Pardo-Rojas, 28, of Belleville, was arrested and charged with DWI.
According to police repots, Officer Darren Kester observed a 1999 Dodge Durango make a left turn from Hope Avenue on to Center Street going in the wrong direction on a one way street and stopped him. While speaking with Rojas, the officer detected signs of intoxication and administered field sobriety tests, which Rojas failed and was arrested, according to police reports. Rojas was charged with DWI and refusal to test once he was at police headquarters.
 
Scam
Police are warning residents to beware of a lottery sweepstakes scam that "looks very legitimate."
Detective Capt. Robert Rowan said a resident received a letter informing him that he had won $95,000 in a European publisher’s sweepstakes and all he had to do was pay a fee of $2,950 to receive his winnings. What made the letter seem legitimate Rowan said, was the realistic check that was included with the letter. Rowan said he has seen this type of scam in the past and people think it’s legitimate because of the check, which they cash, mail in the fee and then they learn the check bounces or drawn on an empty or closed account. The "winner" is then out any money he or she mailed to the scam, Rowan said.
Theft
A man with a blue pickup truck with New York plates pulled into the Shell Station on Route 3 east asked for $50 worth of gas and fled without paying.
Recovered stolen vehicles
A 2000 Dodge Caravan reported stolen on Aug. 30 in Paterson was found on Biron Place, Clifton on Oct. 8.
 
A 1978 freightliner trailer reported stolen Sept. 12 in Clifton was found on Oct. 8 in North Bergen.
Burglaries
The Republican Freeholer headquarters on Lakeview Avenue reported an attempted burglary between Oct. 7 and Oct. 8. According to police reports, pry marks were found on the door.
 
A Stanchack Court home was reported broken into on Oct. 7. A laptop computer was reported stolen from a boy’s bedroom and police said there were no signs of a break-in and are not sure how the home was entered.
 
A Center Street apartment was reported broken into on Oct. 10. According to police reports, the resident left for work and when she returned found the apartment’s rear door had been forced open. Jewelry and currency were reported stolen.
 
A Willet Street home was reported broken into between Oct. 6 and Oct. 7.
According to police reports, the resident said 24 pairs of earrings had been stolen from her jewelry box. Police did not find a point of entry into the home.
Drugs
Pedro Ortiz, 41, of Passaic, and Luis Tomayo, 38, of Passaic, were arrested and charged with possession of heroin on Oct. 8, at 10:23 p.m.
Det. Paul Hasselberger observed Tomayo walking on Lexington and Clifton avenues and stopped him when he recognized him as someone with a history of drug-related crime arrests. While speaking with Tomayo the officer noticed he was acting suspiciously and placed his hand in his pocket. The officer, according to police reports, asked for backup and with the help of detective Randy Colondres searched Tomayo finding a bag of heroin. Tomayo’s companion, Ortiz, was also searched and reports show the officers found heroin hidden inside a cell phone where the internal parts had been removed. Both were charged with possession of heroin.
 
Malik Hamadi, 19, of Clifton, was arrested and charged with possession of 14 small bags of marijuana on Oct. 9 at 4:39 p.m.
Officer Joshin Smith stopped a 1992 Chevy Beretta on Van Houten Avenue and while speaking with the driver found the marijuana. Hamadi was charged with possession of marijuana, possession with intent to distribute marijuana and possession with intent to distribute marijuana in a school zone.
 
Alicia Jenkins, 42, of Passaic, was arrested and charged with possession of prescription drugs and drug paraphernalia on Oct. 8 at 4:58 p.m.
According to police reports, Officer Michael Humenik responded to Biron Place on a report of a suspicious person knocking on doors asking for old clothing. The officer found Jenkins near Paulison Avenue and asked for identification, which she did not have. The officer searched Jenkins and found drugs with no prescription and a straw.
 
Harun Arsal, 25, of Clifton, was arrested and charged with possession of crack cocaine and intent to distribute crack cocaine on Oct. 5, at 4:40 a.m.
According to police reports, Officer Robert Miller observed a 2009 Chevrolet Aveo parked improperly on Day Street and approached. The officer found Arsal asleep behind the wheel and looked inside the car spotting a bag containing a rock-like substance on the seat and another on the floor. The officer woke Arsal and asked for his driver’s license, which according to police records, had been suspended. The officer found 24 bags of the rock-like substance which was identified as crack cocaine. Arsal was charged with possession of crack cocaine, possession of crack cocaine with intent to distribute it within 1,000 feet of a school. He was also charged with possession of drug paraphernalia and given a summons for driving while suspended.
Burglary from vehicles
A 1999 Toyota Camry was reported broken into between Oct. 8 and Oct. 9 while parked on East Fourth Street. Dolce & Gabana sunglasses worth $500 were reported stolen. Officer Robert Miller was on patrol and saw the trunk open and reported it to the owner who noticed the sunglasses had been stolen.
A 2001 Toyota Camry parked next to the other one was also broken into and an Apple iPod was reported stolen.
 
A 2007 Mitsubishi Eclipse was reported broken into on Oct. 8 while parked on Allwood Road.
Books and checks along with a laptop computer were reported stolen after a window was broken. The check book was found later the same day in Newark.
 
A 1997 Chevrolet Malibu was reported broken into on Oct. 8 while parked in the Red Robin parking lot on Route 3 east. A laptop computer and a bag were reported stolen after the window was smashed.
 
A 2004 GMC Envoy was reported stolen while parked on Merselis Avenue on Oct. 10. A GPS system was reported stolen after a window was smashed.
 
A 2000 Ford was reported broken into while parked in the Howard Johnson’s parking lot on Route 3 west on Oct. 11.
The stereo was reported stolen along with Jets football tickets.
 
A 2003 Ford Explorer was reported stolen while parked in the LaQuinta hotel parking lot on Route 3 east between Oct. 10 and Oct. 11.
A GPS reported stolen after a window was smashed.
 
A 1998 Mercury Mountaineer was reported broken into while parked on Fredericks Avenue between Oct. 10 and Oct. 11. The vehicle’s owner’s manual and a Disney lapel pin were reported stolen.
 
A 2008 Dodge Wagon was reported broken into while parked in the LaQuinta parking lot between Oct. 10 and Oct. 11. The driver side door lock was punched out and the owner is not sure if anything was stolen.
 
An attempted burglary was reported on Oct. 11 to a 2002 Hyundai Sonata. The passenger side door was marked up with pry marks left during the attempt.
 
A 1995 Honda Accord parked on Getty Avenue was broken into between Oct. 10 and Oct. 11.
A radio and CD player were reported stolen.
Shoplifters
Aymora Marti, 53, Rutherford, was arrested and charged with shoplifting clothing from Kohl’s on Main Avenue on Oct. 11.
According to police reports, a store security officer observed Marti enter the fitting room with clothing and exited without them. When security checked the fitting room and found no clothing, Marti was stopped and charged with shoplifting.
 
Myrac Powell, 20, of Nutley, was arrested and charged with shoplifting perfume and clothing from Kohl’s on Oct. 11, 11:20 a.m.
According to police reports, store security observed Powell walk into the fitting room with items that she did not have when she left. She was stopped and charged with shoplifting after the items were found concealed on her.
 
Dina Pieri, 29, of Wayne, was arrested and charged with shoplifting from Mandees on Allwood Road on Oct. 7.
According to police reports, Pieri concealed clothing and boots in her bag and attempted to leave the store without paying.
 
Anita Carrillo, 23, of Paterson, was arrested and charged with shoplifting assorted items from the Dollar Tree on Route 46 west on Oct. 8.
According to police reports, the store manager said two women entered the store and Carrillo tried to steal items by placing them in her bag.
Stolen Vehicles
A 1993 Honda Accord was reported stolen on Oct. 9 while parked in the LaQuinta hotel parking lot on Route 3 east.
 
A 2006 Ford Fusion was reported stolen while parked on Union Avenue between Oct. 9 and Oct. 10.
 
A 1998 Ford Explorer was reported stolen while parked on Getty Avenue near Park Slope between Oct. 10 and Oct. 11.
