Police Blotter - Oct. 3

Shoplifting
John Waltenberg, 44, of Paterson, was arrested and charged with shoplifting $926.55 worth of electronic equipment from the Target store on Kingsland Road on Sept. 23. According to police reports, Waltenberg was observed by store security as he placed video games such as Xbox and Wii in a shopping bag in his shopping cart and attempt to leave without paying. The security officer stopped Waltenberg and recovered the merchandise.
 
Temas Hernandez, 48, with no known address, was arrested and charged with shoplifting four bottles of shampoo from the Pathmark on Ackerman Avenue on Sept. 23.
According to police reports, the security officer observed Hernandez placing the shampoo in his pants and detained him. The security officer was threatened by Hernandez in Spanish, reports show.
 
Brian Patterson, 41, of Paterson, and Gregory Terry, 38, also of Paterson, were arrested and charged with shoplifting a laptop computer worth $1,549 from Costco on Bridewell Place on Sept. 20.
According to police reports, Terry took pliers from the hardware department, opened the packaging and used the tool to break off the security device holding the display laptop in place. Patterson then placed the computer under h is shirt and the two attempted to leave the store with the unpaid item.
 
Parsanna Saireddy, 31, of Kearny, was arrested and charged with shoplifting four bracelets worth $104 from the Main Avenue Kohl’s store on Sept. 14. According to police reports, the store’s security officer observed Saireddy walk into the dressing room with the bracelets, but exited without them. Reports show that a search revealed Saireddy had placed the bracelets on her ankles.
Motorist dispute
Equab Murrah, 34, of Paterson, was arrested and charged with endangering the public as he attempted to run another vehicle off the road on Sept. 22 at 1:32 p.m.
According to police reports, a call was received by Clifton police that a white van was chasing a blue Audi on Lakeview and Crooks avenues coming from Paterson and crossing into Clifton. The driver of the Audi told police the van’s driver, Murrah, had fired shots at him with a handgun, but according to police reports, a test kit to determine whether Murrah had discharged a weapon came up negative. When questioned again the Audi’s driver admitted to making up the part about the gun, but told police Murrah had followed him from Route 80 in Paterson onto Lakeview Avenue and both vehicles came to a stop after a accident at Lakeview and Arlington avenues.
Witnesses told police the van’s driver was chasing the Audi.
Murrah was issued numerous motor vehicle violations and other charges are pending for both drivers.
Underage possession of alcohol
Rocco Timoldi, 19, of Clifton, and Jessica Ruppert, 18, of Clifton, were arrested and charged with underage possession of alcoholic beverages on Sept. 19, and 8:49 p.m.
According to police reports, detective Randy Colondres of the Street Crimes Unit observed the two teens walking out of Henry‘s Liquors carrying two large heavy plastic bags and investigated. The officer, according to police reports, carried several beer bottles, Bacardi melon rum, vodka, and a Coca-Cola bottle containing an unknown liquor.
Unexpected visitor
Andres Dias, 25, of Clifton, was arrested and charged with trespassing on Sept. 25 when he was found sleeping on the couch of an Allwood Road resident.
According to police reports, the 72-year-old Allwood Road resident found a stranger asleep on his sofa at about 7:03 a.m. and telephoned the police. When questioned, Dias said he thought he was in a New Brunswick home. According to police reports, officers detected a strong odor of alcohol when speaking with Dias.
Robbery
Francisco Liotti, 35, of Nutley, was charged with robbery after using violence during the commission of a crime, in this case while shoplifting from the Target store on Kingsland Road on Sept. 28.
According to police reports, officers Daniel Telofski and Keith Gormley, responded to Target on a report of a shoplifter fleeing the store. Liotti, according to police reports, ran into Carino’s Italian Grill and fought and resisted when the store security confronted him. The officers found Liotti watching a 2-month-old baby at his home and charged him with robbery.
Drugs
Matthew Ford, 19, of Totowa, was arrested and charged with possession of marijuana on Sept. 16 at 6:12 p.m.
According to police reports, detective Randy Colondres observed a suspicious car on Broad Street and followed it to Valley Road where he made a motor vehicle stop.
When questioning Ford, the officers noted he appeared nervous and at first wouldn’t exit the car stating that he had rights. During a search the officers located marijuana.
 
Ilir Agolli, 20, of Garfield, was arrested and charged with possession of marijuana on Sept. 27.
According to police reports, detectives Paul Ogden and Randy Colondres, both with the Street Crimes Unit, observed a 1999 Nissan Sentra occupied with three men acting suspiciously in the Pathmark parking lot on Ackerman Avenue and approached.
The officers approached and upon searching the car found marijuana and empty Dutch Masters cigars typically used to make blunts, or marijuana cigars. Agolli was charged with possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia.
 
Layth Ebusaba, 19, of Clifton, Jonathan Moldonoto, 24, of Clifton, and Anese Abdallah, 18, of Paterson, were arrested and charged with possession of marijuana on Sept. 26, at 7:02 p.m.
According to police reports, officers Christopher Ianos and Alan Fiorella observed a 2003 Mercedes driving on Lakeview Avenue with no headlights turned on and stopped it. While speaking with the driver, the officers noted the occupants were not wearing seatbelts and the driver appeared nervous and had watery eyes. A search turned up marijuana and a hollowed out cigar casing typically used to make blunts or marijuana cigars, according to police reports. The officers searched further and found two more bags of marijuana and prescription pills without a prescription.
They were arrested and charged with possession of narcotics within 1,000 feet of a school, possession of a weapon and issued several motor vehicle violations.
Criminal mischief
A resident of Hamilton Avenue found the windshield of his 2007 Oldsmobile smashed on the morning of Sept. 28. He told police a baseball from nearby Nash Park may have smashed it, but no ball was found.
 
A resident of Sussex Road and a resident of Orchard Street found their vehicles had been spray painted with lines or Chinese letters. The Buick Regal parked on Sussex Road was painted with Chinese letters on the window sometime between Sept. 27 and Sept. 28. The Infinity on Orchard was painted between Sept. 26 and Sept. 27.
Theft
A customer of the Stop & Shop on Kingsland Road reported her wallet stolen at 5:04 p.m. on Sept. 28. The Belleville resident didn’t realize her wallet was gone until she reached the checkout counter.
 
A patron of the TGIF restaurant on Route 3 east reported her wallet stolen on Sept. 28 at 3:53 p.m.
According to police reports, the Hoboken resident told police a man who had been sitting near her bumped into her and a while later she noticed her wallet was gone and so was the man. The victim found her cell phone cover under the table where the man had been sitting, reports show. When she called to cancel her credit cards, the victim was told $139 had been used on her debit card to purchase liquor at Kingdom Liquors in Newark. The suspect was described a short Hispanic male who didn’t speak English.
 
Copper pipes were reported stolen from Van Riper Avenue between Sept. 27 and Sept. 28. The two pipes are worth $150.
 
Four bronze name plaques from King Solomon cemetery were reported stolen on Sept. 18 at 11:46 a.m. Cemetery caretakers are not sure when the plaques were stolen, they only realized they were missing on Sept. 28.
 
A garden concrete statue in the shape of a fisherman with a yellow coat was reported stolen from East Seventh Street between Sept. 27 and Sept. 28.
Burglary
A Madison Avenue home was reported burglarized between Sept. 24 and Sept. 25. A vacuum cleaner was reported stolen.
DWI
Hermidio Alegre, 61, of Clifton, was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated (DWI) on Sept. 19, at 9:12 p.m.
According to police reports, officers Charles Kling and Daniel Telofski responded to a call for backup from Sgt. Keith Allmendinger who had pulled over Alegre on Maplewood Avenue and detected signs of intoxication.
The officers administered roadside sobriety tests, which Alegre failed, and according to reports he was arrested and transported to police headquarters where he was charged with DWI after posting a .14 on the breath alcohol test. (Reports of .08 and higher show legal intoxication.) He was also charged with having outstanding warrants and given summonses for careless driving and having a suspended driver’s license.
 
Lisa Salzano, 24, of North Arlington, was arrested and charged with DWI on Sept. 25 at 2:25 a.m.
According to police reports, officers Steven Farrell and Wendy Juba responded to Main Avenue at Route 3 on a call from a woman who reported that a man was following her. The officers arrived at the last location the caller had given them, Park Avenue in Nutley where they found her 2008 Honda Accord, but Salzano was not in the area. After a short while the woman exited from a nearby bathroom and when questioned told police she had stopped to use the bathroom. Officers detected signs of intoxication and administered roadside sobriety tests, which reports show Salzano failed. The officers arrested Salzano and transported her to police headquarters where she was charged with DWI after posting a .16 and .17 on breath alcohol tests.
Salzano was also charged with having an open container of an alcoholic beverage in a motor vehicle and given a summons for driving while suspended. The officers did not find anyone following her, reports show.
Burglary to vehicles
A 2002 Jeep Liberty was reported broken into while parked on Washington Avenue between Sept. 27 and Sept. 28.
The car’s contents were strewn about and the owner is looking to see if anything was stolen.
 
A 2001 Honda was reported burglarized on Sept. 27 while parked on Center Street.
According to police reports, the passenger side window was smashed and a GPS and a TV/DVD player stolen.
Stolen vehicle
A 2007 Cadillac was reported stolen on Sept. 24 while parked on Highland Avenue.
According to police reports, the victim left the car with the engine running for 2 minutes at 10:12 p.m. while checking on her aunt, but when she returned the car was gone. Since the car was equipped with Onstar, it was quickly located and recovered in New York City.
