helplessly as their 12-pound dachshund was mauled and killed by a larger dog as they walked on William Street on Sept. 17 at 6:30 a.m.
According to police reports, the owner said he doesn’t usually walk his dog on the side of 119 William St. because of the barking dogs that lives there, but on the morning of Sept. 17, since the dogs were not outside the couple walked by the house. Reports show that as the couple and their dog walked in front of the house, one of the large dogs, a Labrador mix, pushed open the home’s screen door and ran up to the gate, pushing up against it. Reports show that when the Labrador pushed the gate it created a small opening which the dachshund used to enter the property. Once the small dog entered he was bitten on the head by the larger dog, which would not release him even as the owners of the two dogs attempted to save the dachshund.
"At one point the larger dog had the smaller dog entirely in its mouth," according to police, which are based on the small dog owner’s eyewitness accounts. After about 2 minutes the dachshund’s owner managed to get his dog away and rushed him to the Oradell Animal Hospital where a full staff had assembled to treat the dog. He died at the hospital shortly after his arrival, according to police records.
Clifton animal Control Officer Robert Boyle investigating the incident and said he will not file any charges since the large dog never left the property and remained behind the fence. Boyle said there is no history of violence with the dog.
